The vicious abuse, both mental and physical, from the hands of his alcoholic father, with no support at all from his feeble minded mother made sure that by his mid teens he had developed into a disturbed and violent young man acquiring a criminal record as a juvenile offender along the way. He imposed extreme fear in the minds of his victims as the quickest and most effective means of getting what he wanted- and Jed wanted a lot.Eventually, Jed leaves his home to hitch to Carson City in Nevada and comes into contact with a charismatic priest who actually saves him from being brainwashed by ‘The Moonies’.
Jed is persuaded by the priest that perhaps a career with the US Marines may be for the best and so he grudgingly agrees. Before enlisting, the wilder side of Jeds character prevails and he joins a group of hippies enjoying the sexual frenzies and drug excesses provided by the infamous Summer of Love event of 1967 in Los Angeles.A particularly violent incident within the camp forces Jed to ‘disappear’ by urgently enlisting with the Marines just prior to their posting to the Vietnamese War.
During hostilities, Jed is captured and is incarcerated in Hoa LO Prison. He is dreadfully tortured and whilst there became into contact with another US Marine, a guy called Bryce Carter. After his eventual return to the USA, Jed’s particular interest and forced friendship of a particular boy, Damien Murphy, seems uncharacteristic. After all, the boy, now aged 13, is young enough to be his son. Even so, Jed and Damien spend a few weeksVisiting various camp sites. They remain unaware that they are being hotly pursued by Erin and her new found partner, Bryce Carter, who is claiming to be Damiens father.
